Who is Scylla?

Since 2001, Milwaukee Scylla Women’s Rugby has been building a legacy of strong athletes, supportive teammates, and competitive success both on and off the pitch. As a Division II senior women’s club, we are committed to growing the game of rugby in the Milwaukee community by creating opportunities for women to challenge themselves in a team-first environment.

Over the years, Scylla has earned recognition on the national stage, including a Division II National Championship title and multiple Midwest and regional championships. More importantly, we’ve built a lasting culture centered around teamwork, growth, and a shared love of the game.

What Exactly is “Scylla”?

“For Scylla is not mortal; moreover she is savage, extreme, and invincible.” -Homer

In Greek mythology, Scylla, along with the whirlpool Charybdis, guarded both sides of the Straight of Messina between Italy and Sicily. Sailors who traversed the straight would have to choose between risking their lives with one or the other.

Charybdis was a whirlpool, but Scylla was a bonafide monster. According to Greek mythology, Scylla had six ferocious heads, each with three rows of sharp teeth, sitting on six very long necks. Her body was made out of several growling dogs and twelve feet or tentacles (depending on who you ask). Her necks would extend out to passing ships and grab sailors, crushing them against the rocks she sat on before devouring them.

In Loving Memory of Kerry “Goss” Beamon

Kerry “Goss” Beamon joined Milwaukee Scylla in 2004 and quickly became a cornerstone of the club — serving as President, helping lead the team to its first Division II National Championship in 2017, and continuing to give back as a player, coach, and founder of the Scylla Legends group. Known for her strength on the field and unwavering leadership off of it, Kerry’s impact on Scylla spanned generations of players. Her passion for the game, her teammates, and the spirit of Scylla lives on in every player who wears the jersey — which is why we proudly wear KGB on our sleeves in her honor. She will always be a part of this team and forever in the heart of the Scylla family.
